Queensland Symphony Orchestra and Cairns Civic Theatre proudly present Ravel’s sizzling masterpiece – Bolero; fiery, passionate, Spanish-flavoured and adored across the globe, Bolero is French composer Ravel’s most famous work for orchestra.

For many across the globe, the defining moment for Bolero in the modern era was when British ice skaters Torvill and Dean used the powerful piece as the soundtrack to their historic gold-medal-winning performance at the 1984 Winter Olympics. The piece is also well known from 1979’s 10, the movie that made Dudley Moore and Bo Derek household names and Ravel’s Bolero a household tune.

Join us for an evening of magnificent music, and a thrilling finale, featuring Tchaikovsky and Bizet.

The performance will feature Russian powerhouse pianist Marina Yakhlakova, returning to Queensland after her celebrated Australian debut in 2014, with a performance of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No.1, accompanied by the Queensland Symphony Orchestra.

The performance will be led by young Australian conductor, Jessica Cottis. Hailed in the UK music press as ‘the one to watch’, Jessica is fast gaining an international reputation as one of the most exciting conductors of her generation.
