“To write a symphony is for me to construct a world,” Mahler said. How true this is of this intensely cast blockbuster. Of Herculean scale, the composer employs solo voice and chorus as well as massive instrumental forces to create the grand vision and emotional power in this vivid ode to nature. Deborah Humble’s lovely pliant singing and narrative authority in the ethereal Fourth Movement is destined to enthral.
