A record number of more than 20 performers are appearing at the 2017 festival, in a diverse programthat is based on narrative: stories, dreams and fairytales from strikingly different veins of Australia’s rich cultural lode.

Inspiring string players Sophie Rowell, Rachel Smith, Caroline Henbest, Louise King and Eric de Wit make return appearances in 2017, alongside English clarinettist William Stafford and not one but three pianists: Stephen Emmerson, Paul Hankinson and Ayesha Gough.

The six concerts feature masterworks by Haydn, Mozart, Schumann, Janacek, Brahms, Dvorak, Poulenc, Szymanowski and others.

In her first appearance at the festival, acclaimed classical guitarist Karin Schaupp plays gems from the classical guitar repertoire, including Boccherini’s brilliant “Fandango” guitar quintet, at a “Breakfast Fandango” concert at the Point Lookout Community Hall.

The spotlight will be on a very different plucked instrument – the oud, or Middle Eastern lute – at the ever-popular Saturday-night concert at the Point Lookout Surf Life Saving Club, when the ARIA Award-winning Joseph Tawadros Quartet (Joseph Tawadros, oud; Matt McMahon, piano; Karl Dunnicliff, double bass; James Tawadros, percussion) bring their joyous performing dynamic to the clubhouse stage.

On Sunday at Dunwich Public Hall, there’ll be even more cultural contrast. In the morning concert, musical miniatures that celebrate the natural world are linked by Chenoa Deemal’s narrations of stories from Oodgeroo’s Stradbroke Dreamtime, in a performance that pays tribute to Quandamooka cultural heritage and to festival founder Jani Haenke.

Then, in the afternoon, the festival’s 10-year anniversary will be celebrated by the premiere performance of a piece for clarinet, violin, cello and piano by Israeli-Australian composer Yitzhak Yedid, specially commissioned for the festival.
