At a spectacular gala recital, The Elton Bastos Duo present the album Essencia Urbana in its entirety. The concert will be performed by the original composers, the consummate Portuguese violist Raquel Bastos and the prestigious Australian pianist Dr. Cécile Elton, with an additional set accompanied by special guests Stephen Cuttriss on bandoneon and Chloe Williamson on double bass.
This is a gala event for the consummate appreciator of classical contemporary music, which will also feature a demonstration of tango, that most effusive of dance styles, stern and passionate at once.
Essencia Urbana is a collection of deliciously creative compositions, which fuse diverse international influences. Like old friends reunited, the Portuguese culture of poignant fado (fate) music and the tremulous beating soul of the Argentinian tango embrace with superb balance.
The album responds directly to the poetry of Portugal’s cultural icon, Fernando Pessoa. This renowned author of the early 20th century has obtained the status of mythical hero, for his fadopoetry written from his seventy-five multiple personalities.
In order to better understand Pessoa, the man and the muse, Bastos will recite selected poems in the original language, and provide intimate translations.
The evening will be enlivened by a passionate demonstration of world-class tango. by international award-winning performers, Jose Camean and May Carreras, specialists in latin dance and Argentinean tango.
Raquel Bastos is a vibrant and energetic soloist and chamber musician, having toured across five continents, a remarkable achievement for a musician of only 35. Ambitions, driven, and passionately talented, Bastos gives the viola a voice of passion and intrigue.
Dr Cécile Elton is a highly awarded Australian composer-pianist, who has received an Academic Excellence award to honour her contribution to the field when awarded as Doctor of Musical Arts. Her quest to capture and embody tango can be heard in every resonate tone of Essencia Urbana.
The show will run for 2 hours plus an interval.
