Maurice RAVEL – Chansons Madécasses
Jean FRANÇAIX – Trio for Flute, Cello and Piano
Henri DUTILLEUX – Sonatine
Claude DEBUSSY – Cello Sonata
Phillipe GAUBERT – Trois Aquarelles
Our third concert of 2017 takes us on a journey through the many colours of French music in the 20th Century. We’re pleased to welcome guest mezzo-soprano Shikara RIngdahl who joins us in Ravel’s primal Chansons Madecasses (“Madagascan Songs”). This is followed by Françaix’s delightfully quirky Trio for Flute, Cello and Piano, and the Dutilleux Sonatine, a late example of the French flute school. Debussy’s late Cello Sonata departs from the style of writing usually associated with his name, with striking characterisations and sound worlds. The concert closes with Gaubert’s Trois Aquarelles (“Three Watercolours”), a collection of scenes depicted through broad sweeping melodies and vibrant tone colours.
