CREATIVE FUSIONS Summer Music School @ Queenland Multicultural Centre
Jan 15 – Jan 19 all-day

BEMAC is thrilled to once again have partnered with ground-breaking music and arts organisation Sounds Across Oceans to deliver another unique Summer School expeience –  CREATIVE FUSIONS 2018.

Open to musicians from 10 to 110 years, CREATIVE FUSIONS 2018 offers participants an inspiring music-making week-long summer program that focuses on fusing diverse musical styles, storytelling and dance in an exploration of music-making.

Sounds Across Oceans (SAO) is a unique music and arts organisation, established by composer/educator/performer, Dr. Anthony Garcia, to explore and promote a more holistic vision of music and its role in society. Through innovative education programs, workshops, presentations and performances that focus on collaboration, improvisation and experimentation, SAO builds bridges between genres, cultures and communities.

The Summer School brings together young aspiring musicians, world music specialists, innovative jazz and classical musicians with musical forms and sounds from across the globe to create new music. The program will culminate in a special performance, showcasing original ideas and compositions developed throughout the learning journey, giving participants the opportunity to perform to family, friends and new audiences.

Whether you play an instrument in your garage band, are just starting on your musical journey, or are a seasoned jazz singer,  or would like to learn a new skill, CREATIVE FUSIONS 2018 is the ideal way to experiment and collaborate in a creative and supportive space.

All instruments, styles and experience levels are welcome.

TOGNETTI TCHAIKOVSKY BRAHMS – Presented by ACO @ QPAC Concert Hall
Feb 12 @ 7:00 pm

ANNA CLYNE Prince of Clouds Australian Premiere
TCHAIKOVSKY Serenade for Strings in C major
MISSY MAZZOLI Dark with Excessive Bright
World Premiere*
BRAHMS (arr. strings) String Sextet No.2 in G major
* Commissioned by the Australian Chamber Orchestra and Aurora Orchestra
ARTISTS
Richard Tognetti Director & Violin
Maxime Bibeau Double Bass
Ike See Violin
Glenn Christensen Violin
with Musicians from the Australian National Academy of Music

This is an explosive start to our 2018 Season.

Brahms’ Sextet in G major is so rich, so melodic, and so emotively powerful that, when bolstered in our new arrangement for full string orchestra, Richard Tognetti calls it Brahms’ ‘Fifth Symphony’. Add to that the relentlessly youthful energy from the players of the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM), and you’re witnessing something akin to alchemy.

When your senses need soothing, Tchaikovsky’s soaring Serenade for Strings makes sure that whatever lies deep in our hearts gets a chance to gasp for air. Then it’s back to the future with two new works by Missy Mazzoli and Anna Clyne. Brooklyn-born Mazzoli’s world premiere concerto was commissioned especially for our Principal Double Bass Maxime Bibeau, in honour of his 20 years with the Orchestra.

Anna Clyne’s Grammy Award-nominated double violin concerto, Prince of Clouds, receives its Australian Premiere. The concerto, which the New York Times described as ‘ravishing’, gives two of our newest stars Ike See and Glenn Christensen their moment to shine.

In one word: epic.

Glass, Dean, Mendelssohn – Presented by the Australian String Quartet @ Conservatorium Theatre
Feb 22 @ 7:00 pm

Single tickets on sale December 2017

Presented in association with Griffith University

Philip Glass String Quartet no 3 Mishima
Brett Dean String Quartet no 1 Eclipse
Mendelssohn String Quartet in D major op 44 no 1

Philip Glass reflects upon the life of the iconic poet Yukio Mishima in a work of great evocative power, gripping in its vivid musical imagery of the controversial artist’s turbulent life. Brett Dean’s art is driven by serious concerns and his first string quartet responds to the events of the refugee crisis, through music of haunting eeriness and explosive anger reaching tentatively towards the hope for peace.

The intensity of these opening works finds a perfect counterpoise in Mendelssohn’s radiant String Quartet in D major, where the composer marshals the full resources of his prodigious musicality in a virtuosic creation of musical sunshine. With all the ecstatic brilliance of the composer’s most joyful music, the quartet reminds us of music’s power to revive the spirit.
