Give yourself or your child a much better chance with an Instrument

that won’t hold you back

If you or your child have been playing for longer than 3 years, an intermediate instrument is the right type of instrument for you… unless you know you want to play for a long time and just want to play on an advanced instrument…

If you are looking for a large variety of instruments regardless of quality, this is not the place to look! (there are plenty of shops in Australia that do that)

All instruments available at The Violin Studio have been thoroughly researched and tested by a professional violinmaker as well as professional string players and teachers.

So I have done the hard work for you and you can be sure that every instrument that is listed here, or in my shop is of a very good quality.

The big reason to buy your intermediate instrument from The Violin Studio, is because each instrument is personally set up by myself. There are no Instruments in Australia set up in that way.

These are the things I do:

  1. I check over every instrument before I decide that if is good enough to make it into the showroom.
  2. I plane the fingerboard to the same shape that I would for a professional instrument!
  3. I fit and service the pegs so they are easy to turn, but don’t slip.
  4. Then I fit one of my bridges to bring out the best acoustics in the instrument, as well as making sure that the string height, string spacing and curve is like a professional instrument.
  5. After that I fit and adjust the soundpost (In some languages the name is the same as Soul!).
  6. Finally I fit it with the best strings for that instrument.
  7. I also rosin up and check the bow. All my new instruments come with a 30 day money back guarantee, because I don’t ever want someone to own an instrument they don’t like.
  8. Then I put the instrument through it’s paces and try it for a while… sometimes a long while, because it has such a nice tone.

The Violin Studio has provided my students with beautiful and resonant instruments of excellent quality. My students come in all sizes, and so do their instruments. As I know how crucial it is for beginners to have a good sounding instrument, I must say that I am impressed by the quality of Olaf Grawert’s small violins such as quarter and half size.

Hanna, violin and viola teacher and professional player

————————————

I grew up learning about violins. At the tender age of four, I spent countless hours in the small violin making and restoration workshop that my father owned near Hamburg in Germany. My father is a German Master violinmaker with over 55 years of experience. My father understood that a 4 year old’s hearing is far more sensitive than people that are older, and always asked me for my opinion on instruments… That way I learned about judging good tone from a very early age… I started playing violin at the age of eight and became very passionate about the violin.

In 1986, I finished school and decided to continue my passion for stringed instruments. I learned with my father and become a violin maker and restorer myself. It was not easy and took many years. I learned the craft from my father at first and in 1990 I went to Germany, where I got further training with one of the worlds top firms and worked on and restored fine antique instruments often worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. Over the years I have done work for many professionals and students giving me a great insight into finding good quality instruments.

I set up The Violin Studio in 1999 to truly support string players from the ground up all the way to concert level.  It was really frustrating to see the many instruments that were being sold as intermediate, which should not even be used by beginners… I set out to find some great intermediate instruments. I sifted through the many intermediate level instruments available in Australia as well as internationally to find the best quality instruments that I could find for their workmanship, sound and materials used. They also had to be really good value.

I believe our instruments to be the best quality instruments available in Australia in their respective price classes. I get a lot of positive feedback from string teachers.

If you order an instrument and are not happy with it, you can send it back on our 30 Day money back guarantee! I will fully refund you for the instrument, so you can’t really loose…  I really wouldn’t want you to play a violin that you don’t like.

At The Violin Studio I make sure that absolutely every instrument that is sold is fully professionally set up and carefully checked before it leaves the shop. I often come across Instruments sold through shops that still need to have up to $385 of work done just to be playable!! That is a risk just not worth taking. Our instruments may cost slightly more than at other music shops, but you get hundreds of dollars extra value and the assurance that each instrument has been set up, played and fully inspected by a fully trained violinmaker.

At The Violin Studio we make sure that absolutely every instrument that is sold is fully set up and carefully checked before it leaves the shop.

The Violin Studio Set up includes:

  • Planing the Fingerboard to a professional standard. This means that you will have a fingerboard that has the same shape as that of most instruments that you will hear in concert halls around the world ($120 value)
  • I will fit a professional top quality French or German bridge crafted by a master violin maker with specialized acoustic knowledge to make the instrument sound the best that it can.($140 value)
  • Fit a professional quality soundpost to really bring out the rich tonal qualities. There is a reason that in many languages the soundpost is called the “Soul”. It takes a master to fit and move the soundpost into the right position to really make the instrument sing. ($60 value)
  • I always fit the Instruments with great quality strings for that rich sound. they alone cost $105
  • Each peg is carefully refitted to make sure that if is very easy to tune the instrument using the pegs. (Between $40 and $90 value)
  • The tailpiece is checked or replaced to make sure it is in the best acoustical position ($30 value)
  • I check and recheck the string height and spacing to make sure it is absolutely perfect. It is only easy to play the violin when the string height is absolutely right. ($20+ value)
  • I make sure that everything about the bow works well.($20+ value)
  • I always play each instrument and adjust it until I’m so happy with it that I want to keep the violin myself. I always try out the instruments far too long, because they are so much fun to play. This way you can be sure that when your instrument leaves my workshop, everything about it is perfect. (Priceless)

At The Violin Studio I am always researching all instruments that are available. So when you buy and instrument with us, you will always find top quality and sounding instruments available in it’s price class. All Instruments in stock are set up to a professional level. I firmly believe that all musicians, students and professionals alike should have access to instruments set up to the highest standard. Playing an instrument is difficult enough without a bad set up.

I make sure that the pegs are easy to turn, that the fingerboard has the exact right shape, that the playing action is right, so the instrument is easy to play and that the sound is of good quality. I only stock instruments that I can personally recommend as being of good quality.
We always have a range of quality Instruments not listed here. Below is a range of some instruments that we carry.

What sets the Instruments available at The Violin Studio apart?

  1. As a violin maker as well as player I carefully choose a small selection of the best Instruments available in Australia and directly from the makers.
  2. Most importantly I choose the instruments that I will stock for their outstanding sound. They need to have a rich carrying clear tone.
  3. Then I check the instrument for quality materials and workmanship.
  4. Then I set up each instrument like I would set up any professional instrument. :
    • I plane the Fingerboard to a professional standard. This means that you will have a fingerboard that has the same shape as that of most instruments that you will hear in concert halls around the world
    • I will fit a professional quality French bridge crafted by a master violin maker with specialized acoustic knowledge to make the instrument sound the best that it can.
