To round out 24 hours of phenomenal new music, QSOCurrent includes free events in the South Bank Parklands and the State Library of Queensland.

On Friday May 15 at 5pm, South Bank Parklands will host the premiere of Ben Marks’ The Circular Ruins, based on a short story by Jorge Luis Borges and performed by staff and students of Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University.

On Saturday May 16 between 11am and 4pm, the State Library of Queensland will host a series of pop-up concerts featuring Kupka’s Piano, The Australian Voices and the Rafael Karlen Quartet.

The Australian Voices present two micro programs of Australian works. You will probably hear the voice of a recent Prime Minister, an off-the-wall radio broadcast (in the shape of a choral piece) and words that – well – change into other words.

Kupka’s Piano present works by Donatoni, Berio, Manoury and Wubbels as well as world premieres of new works by Australian composers Alan Lawrence and Michael Bakrncev. Commissioned specifically for QSOCurrent and QANZAC 100, these new works draw their inspiration from the QANZAC 100 theme of commemorating our past and capturing contemporary and living memories of Queensland’s experiences during and after the First World War.

Rafael Karlen Quartet present a series of shorter pieces and episodes commissioned for The 2014 Brisbane International Jazz Festival, as well as compositions from Rafael’s latest album, The Sweetness of Things Half-Remembered.
