Free pre-concert talk with music critic, author and broadcaster Stephen Johnson one hour prior to the concert.
The QSO has invited rock-star particle physicist Professor Brian Cox, OBE star of the smash BBC TV series The Wonders of The Solar System, who is credited around the world with reviving the popularity of science, to present an exclusive spectacular event combining science, music, voice, and film, titled Journey through the Cosmos. Cox’s engaging style and incredible knowledge have made him an international sensation. The evening will comprise:
Marianelli Voyager Violin Concerto – World Premiere, QSO commission Professor Brian Cox will introduce the world premiere of Marianelli’s Voyager Violin Concerto, performed by Jack Liebeck and the QSO, conducted by Chief Conductor Johannes Fritzsch.
Holst The Planets Suite
Presentation by Professor Brian Cox about the planets in our solar system with video footage, with a performance of Gustav Holst’s The Planets Suite by the QSO conducted by Chief Conductor Johannes Fritzsch with accompanying video footage of the planets depicted in the music.
This symphony is one of the most spectacular works in all symphonic literature (voted at the top of the ABC’s Classic 100 20th century masterpieces and celebrated as the theme of the Rugby World Cup).
The Planets Suite is a seven movement orchestral work where each movement is named after a planet of the Solar System and its corresponding astrological character as defined by Holst:
Mars the Bringer of War
Venus the Bringer of Peace
Mercury the Winged Messenger
Jupiter the Bringer of Jollity
Saturn the Bringer of Old Age
Uranus the Magician
Neptune the Mystic, with a wordless, female choir from The Australian Voices
