BaBa ZuLa are the unrivalled torchbearers of 21st Century psychedelic Turkish rock ’n’ roll.

Since 1996, the band has drawn inspiration from Istanbul’s rich history and the music of the sixties, fusing it with Oriental Dub and an electric energy that guarantees no two live shows are the same.

Their trance-inducing music is equally for electronic, dub, Turkish folk music fans and psychedelic rock heads. In 2005 they were featured in the film “Crossing The Bridge” which chronicled the diverse musical scene of Istanbul and two of their best known albums were produced by British dub legend Mad Professor.

Their ritual-like performances are a mixture of disciplines of art, often featuring belly dancers, elaborate costumes, poetry, theatre and live drawing, and by mixing oriental instruments such as the darbuka, electric saz, and spoons with electronics and modern sounds. Despite sounds that might initially come to mind when one hears a phrase like “Oriental Dub”, Baba ZuLa’s music is in fact psychedelic Istanbul rock’n’roll that rolls in a way that westerners haven’t heard so frequently since the late ’60s rock epoch.

BaBa ZuLa are: Murat Ertel – Electro Bağlama, vocal and effects, Levent Akman – Electronics, percussion and cymbals, Melike Şahin – vocals, Periklis Tsoukalas – Electro Oud and Ümit Adakale – Darbuka.

BaBa ZuLa are taking the stage at one of Brisbane’s finest Live Music Space; The TRIFFID, before they head down to Adelaide for their WOMADelaide performances.

Supporting BaBa ZuLa for this show, their first ever in Brisbane, are award winning and internationally touring 6 piece Gypsy Folk band from Brisbane, MZAZA featuring French vocals and instrumentalists from Bosnia, Greece, Latvia, and Australia and SABROSA SOUND SYSTEM who are dedicated to the forgotten rhythms of a tropical revolution, taking an unchartered exploration into the gritty, sand swept, back streets of Africa, the Caribbean Islands and Latin America, alongside it’s strongly rooted African lineage.
